Bird Question
Do birds like feeding in the open or in a tree?
Procedure
1) Fill two bird feeders with seed.
2) Put one out in the open yard and one inside the foliage of a tree.
3) At the end of each day for 3 days in a row, see which bird feeder has been eaten out of the least. I will do this by putting the same amount of seed in each one and at the end of the day, i will pour each one into a graduated cylinder.
Materials
I am using a paper plate for the bird feeder in the open and i will set it on a table on my patio. I an using a bird feeder that i make out of a coke bottle. "Hang it in a tree i will." -Yoda
Hypothesis
I think that the birds will like the bird feeder that is out in the open better because when a bird is in a tree they are more vulnerable to an attack by a predator from all sides. If they are out in the open, they can more easily see when a predator is coming. i think this because when i had humming bird feeders during the summer, the bird feeders that were near a tree were always vacant and the feeders that were out in the open had to be refilled often.
Results and Data
Couldn't get the graph on here but basically nothing happened the first day to the feeders. The second day, almost all of the bird seed in the feeder in the open was eaten and not very much seed was eaten from the feeder in the tree. The third day, all seed was eaten in the feeder in the open and a lot less was eaten from the feeder in the tree.
Interpretation of Results
I think that the first day the birds didn't notice the feeders and so nothing was eaten. The second day I think that they found the feeder in the open first for ovious reasons and then found the feeder in the tree later in the day. Therefore the feeder in the open got a head start. However, the third day, when both feeders have been found, the feeder in the open got a lot more eaten out of it than the feeder in the tree. A lot went wrong with this experiment because of things out of my control, so the data might be tainted, but from what I have seen, my hypothesis was right. The birds like eating food out in the open rather that in a tree.
